UPCOMING SESSIONS:

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 | 6:30 - 8 PM ET

Theme: Writing to Reframe the Future

We will write about who we've been, who we are, and who we are called to be, as we reclaim our imaginations around what our futures can look like. Participants will reference examples of published works, writing prompts, and reflection questions to practice visualizing new realities and shaping new narratives.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12 | 6:30 - 8 PM ET

Theme:  Writing about Family and Friendship

In this session, we’ll explore the benefits, complexities, and challenges of writing about family and friendship. To explore different approaches, we will study examples of published works, and experiment with different forms like micro-memoir, flash fiction, and poetry.

PAST SESSIONS:

August Theme: Finding Poetry in Daily Life

Participants will learn writing exercises that center poetry as a creative way to practice gratitude. We’ll read and write poems that highlight the beauty in our everyday routines, interactions, challenges, and triumphs; as we slow down, deepen our awareness, and focus our attention in inspiring ways.

June Theme: Writing About Identity and Culture

We will write about the roles that culture and tradition play in shaping our individual and group identities, and read examples of how different writers capture these dynamics. Writers will reflect on how cultural context influences the stories they tell about their lives and how they assign meaning to their experiences.

May Theme: Writing About Mental Illness

In the spirit of healing through storytelling, participants will be prompted to write about their mental health journeys and/or how mental illness has directly or indirectly affected their lives. To explore different approaches, we will read pieces by Bassey Ikpi, Melissa Broder, Marya Hornbacher and more.

April Theme: Personal Stories and Poetry

We will study works by Lucille Clifton, Maya Angelou, and Yrsa Daley-Ward to provide inspiration as we blend poetry and memoir to write about our life experiences. Participants will be given prompts and reflection questions to generate poems.

March Theme: Writing About Grief and Loss

We read reflections on grief and loss from writers like Joan Didion, Cheryl Strayed, and Jesmyn Ward. Writing prompts gave participants a creative outlet to express the range of emotions that accompany loss.

February Theme: Awakening Joy Through Journaling

In celebration of Black History Month, we read different perspectives on joy and gratitude as expressed by Black writers and visionaries. Writers worked on reflection questions that examined how gratitude provides a steady flow of creativity.

January Theme: Writing Through the Winter

We explored ways to use writing as a tool for soul searching work during long winter nights. Participants wrote about the challenges, joys and lessons of colder weather and seasons of retreat and isolation.
